Source Segregation:

The key to minimization and effective management of healthcare waste is segregation (separation) and identification of the waste. Segregationat source is necessary, as different types of waste need different treatment and disposal. It is a safe method by which the generator and the handler help in –

(i) Reducing the total treatment cost.

(ii) Ensuring that general waste does not become infectious and

(iii) Reducing the chances of infection in healthcare personnel and the general community.
